Praying in front of other people doesn’t feel easy for some reason, so here are some thoughts and prompts—because this is one of the best ways we can lead our team!

Remember what Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount about prayer:

7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” (Matthew 6:7-8)

Your prayers for and with the team don’t need to be complicated.

1. Pray for yourself.

You’re a leader, so pray that you would lead like Jesus! He leads with authority and gentleness—he holds us to holy standards but is empathetic with our weaknesses. Pray that the Lord would use you to encourage the team and the church through everything we do on Sunday.

2. Pray for the team.

Some people may be feeling nervous about performing well in their role—some people may be distracted by concerns or losses at home. This is the moment to recognize we’re not just volunteers, but we’re all people in need of grace.

It’s a good thing to pray that things go well on Sunday morning—that’s why our team exists! But whether or not things go well, whether there are distractions or not, whether there are big wins or big losses, we want to be disciples of Jesus first. And disciples of Jesus need to have their hearts reoriented to Gospel truth that we are saved no matter what we do, especially before we go and do.

3. Pray for the gathering.
